The moral panic over homophobia

“Moral panic over homophobia” says Brexit Party Pillar, Brendan O’Neill.

“Once, there were moral panics over homosexuality. Now there’s a moral panic over homophobia.” writes Brexit Party support Brendan O’Neill.

“There is something nauseating about the way in which gay-rights groups and political observers held up this crime as typical, as an ordinary event in a society like ours that is apparently riddled with homophobia” he continues, commenting on the attack on Lesbians on an all-night London Bus route in Camden.

In an outburst of emotionalism the Spiked editor pictures attempts to “depict society as a hotbed of rough, unenlightened beasts whose backward attitudes – in this case on homosexuality – threaten to tear apart the social fabric itself.” Drawing on the work of Cultural studies (Policing the Crisis: Mugging, the State and Law and Order. Stuart Hall 1978) , and the classic studies of “moral panics” he claims,

In all these instances, crime has been overblown in order to construct an elitist, moralistic message about the vulnerability of certain identity groups and the wickedness of the uneducated, un-PC, dangerous throng. Identitarian groups might benefit from inflating their claims to victimhood – because that is increasingly the way in which people win moral recognition and social resources – but the broader social impact of this new, left-leaning crime construction is likely to be dire.

The moral panic over homophobia

Last week Spiked defended this lot:

Esther McVey is right about the Birmingham schools row

Joanna Williams,

Five-year-olds are on the frontline of the culture war in Birmingham. At school, they are taught about lesbian, gay and bisexual relationships and about gender and transgender issues. Meanwhile, mainly Muslim protesters argue that these lessons are inappropriate for such young children and run counter to the religious beliefs of their parents. They have taken to demonstrating outside local schools. ‘You say we are homophobic, we say you are Islamophobic’, said one, neatly summing up the state of identity politics today.

The Birmingham parents are right to be angry that the state, via schools and teachers, should try to dictate how people should behave in the most intimate sphere of their lives. Demonstrating outside primary schools is ugly and shows children the divisions between the adults in their lives. But the last thing Birmingham families need right now is High Court interference. They need schools to stop teaching children about relationships once and for all.

Spiked defends on set of identity politics, the “Birmingham families”, but not another, the stirrers up of a “Moral panic” about homophobia.

A cultural conservative would say that the former RCP are well on the way to ..cultural conservatism. The politics of emotion, anger at “the state” telling people “how to Behave”.

In short a classic identity politics of the natural, the indigenous, “the people” of National populism, hard done by folk misled by “elites”.

In the meantime his comrade in the Brexit Party is free to enjoy her emotive Zombie politics, subsidised by the EU.

Someone’s living the Life of Riley.

  1. Attacking girls in the US of A is a good way to get shot full of holes. We have a Second Amendment where Eurosocialists have Kristallnacht laws. Arming the ladies would put a halt to girl-bullying and Saracen seducers with shivs.

  4. So railing against the ‘liberal élite’ means more or less excusing the violent behaviour of the lumpen-proletariat; railing against state-sponsored toleration means more or less backing anti-gay bigots outside Birmingham schools. And if it’s down to parents and not the state to teach morality to kids, it’s alright, therefore, for bigoted adults to inculcate bigotry in their offspring.

  5. I would be genuinely interested to know how O’Bollox thinks schools should discharge their duty of care, acting in loco parentis, to protect gay kids from homophobic bullying. Perhaps someone in something like an “academy of ideas” might have a couple of thoughts?

    • Spiked are involved in a publicly subsidised Academy, in the education system, just like all the cults. Can’t remember its name for the moment.

In the meantime this on the RCP’s transformation (2010) is worth reading:
