Support Christians of Iraq against Persecution.

with 8 comments

There are many causes worth supporting at the moment.

The appeal to stop Israel’s actions in Gaza is one.

But this is of utmost urgency as well.

Owen Jones has said,

Those of us on the left – who advocate religious acceptance and diversity – must surely speak louder about the persecution of Christians. The suffering and oppression is real, and in many places, getting ever worse. If we do not speak out, the danger is it will be left to those with ulterior motives who wish to hijack misery to fuel religious hatred – with disastrous consequences.

Why the left must speak up about the persecution of Christians

These are two protests.

Wider action, including from the progressive and labour movement, would be welcome.

The Islamic State, which last month declared a “caliphate” comprising large swathes of northern Iraq and Syria, has threatened a Christian presence in the region spanning close to two millennia. On Monday the United Nations Security Council denounced militant persecution of Christians and other minorities in Iraq, warning such actions can be considered crimes against humanity. Before the 2003 US invasion, more than a million Christians lived in Iraq, including more than 600,000 in Baghdad and 60,000 in Mosul, as well as a substantial number in the oil city of Kirkuk and in Basra.Until their forced exodus over the weekend, Christians had been continuously present in Mosul for about 16 centuries.Read more: (The Daily Star :: Lebanon News)

  1. The problem with you drone supporting leftists is that we need to ask the question, where were you when the Sunni’s were being ruthlessly persecuted?

Your entire outlook always, but always, perfectly tunes into the interests of imperialism.

This is why these articles, from the likes of you, don’t come across as humanitarian pleas but imperialist interest. So we read this and don’t think, I am glad they have brought this to my attention (what nice people) but rather we say, look at these scumbags, look at how they use persecution for their own ends, what sum, what total and utter scum, the scumiest scum of them all.

Pure and unadulterated scum, scum that had been filtered of all the non scum, leaving only scum in its most pure form. SCUM!

  4. Dear Socialism in One Bedroom,

Your post is typical of the Platonic ‘Philosopher King’ mentality of Swerper types.

Be careful,”Drone supporting leftists” ,can now include those that support Hamas who have also eagerly taken up with this type of military technology

You pose the question “where were you when the Sunni.where being ruthlessly persecuted.?”

A frivolous question given that there were many left wing web sites that did cover all aspects of the sectarian violence from around 2006 onwards. Not surprisingly, little analysis from the orthodox trots on this type of issue..

You apparently have almost mystical powers that are able to divine that this article is somehow apologetic to imperialism when it is obvious to us mere mortals that the article does what it says on the tin, by yes, actually highlighting the fact that Christians have been killed, are being killed and will be killed by ISIS who ultimately have their own imperialist agenda. Any article such as this can only be interpreted as humanitarian.

For some obscure reason you hang your hat on imperialist interest without setting out which type of imperialism you refer to, there being around 57 varieties. In a nutshell your’e attempts at political reasoning is so insane that it is highly improbable that your’e socialism would survive outside of the confines of your bedroom.

Try harder and give the absurd nonsense a swerve! .

  5. Andrew – sometimes blog owners, in order to drum up a bit of interest and controversy, invent contrarian characters, under whose names they post vituperative but incoherent contributions, just to get people going a bit. It is an extremely naughty practice, of course. I hope you can confirm that you have not been doing that… 😉

  6. More seriously, though, I’m not sure what the left, as such, can usefully do here. ISIS certainly are not going to listen to a bunch of godless western communists – the Catholics at Notre Dame would have more leverage with ISIS than we would. We could. of course, demand that our government should not only desist from supporting the rebellion in Syria, but should actively support the Assad regime, which is clearly the best (indeed, the only) guarantor of religious pluralism in that area. But that would probably be distasteful for people who like to take the moral high ground in their political pronouncements. The lesser of two evils can still be profoundly evil, after all.
