Andy Newman Next Labour MP for Chippenham!

with 17 comments

Marxists back Newman in Chippenham!

Andy Newman is the Labour Party prospective candidate for the Chippenham constituency.

Congratulations!

On the excellent Andy Newman For Chippenham blog Labour’s proud record is defended,

We should be very proud of what was achieved by the Labour government between 1997 and 2010.

The Labour government with Gordon Brown as Prime Minister, and Alistair Darling as Chancellor, had introduced a number of specific and targeted measures that boosted the economy.

Comrade Newman spent much of this time backing the Labour Party by supporting candidates of Respect and Socialist Unity.

He was Swindon spokesman for the Respect Party and, amongst other activities,  invited George Galloway to speak at the town.

Newman ran the Socialist Unity site.

We say, phooey! and whatabout?  to this past.

In a gesture of solidarity we announce our intention to campaign for Comrade Newman.

Chippenham Map for Socialist Canvassers.

Hat-Tip, Facebook.

Update: a bit tardy but worth waiting for, Andy Newman announces his candidacy on his own site.

The Wiltshire Daily Small Pig Breeder and the North Wiltshire Digital DJ, Alan Patridge Jnr, have given this extensive coverage.

The contest looks a close run with Labour scoring 6.9% in Chippenham at the last election.

  1. The International media are already talking about this story,

The Bath Chronicle, Cornfactor and Cordwainer’s Digest reported yesterday,

“The Labour Party has selected a telecommunications engineer and political writer to stand in the Chippenham constituency at the next General Election.

Andy Newman, who is branch secretary of the GMB union in Wiltshire, has been chosen to represent the party at the election, scheduled to take place in May 2015.

The constituency includes Corsham, Bradford on Avon, Melksham and Chippenham.

Mr Newman is a prolific political writer who has had his work published in newspapers and magazines as diverse as the Guardian, Western Daily Press and the Morning Star.

He said he was looking forward to showing the voters of west Wiltshire that the Labour party was the best choice to lead the country.

He said: “The Conservative-led government has prolonged the recession by their failed austerity policies, and unfortunately the Liberal Democrats have supported them.”

He added: “I look forward to offering the voters of Chippenham a real alternative.

“Only a Labour Government can restore Britain to prosperity.”

The current MP for Chippenham is Liberal Democrat Duncan Hames.

The constituency was formed in 2010, bringing together the electoral wards from the former districts of North Wiltshire and West Wiltshire.

  2. If I lived in Swindon I would NOT vote for this supporter of clerical fascism.

The rest of my thoughts are unprintable for the moment. Had to check I was fully awake when I read this.

    Schmuck will do for now!!!

  5. We hear that a gang of splitters has launched a “No2AN” Campaign backed – we regret – by leading figures in the labour movement with a ‘Stroppy’ attitude.

The People’s Front for the Liberation of Chippenham, Melksham and Braford Avon (Marxist-Leninist) also intend to stand a candidate.

  7. I thought that the Chippenhams were more a kind of understudy troupe for the Chippendales.

  8. Reform the constituency electoral system as has been pioneered by the Socialist Unity site. Ban 95% of the population! Limit the participation!

  9. @Rosie – yes, he told me it was important to stick together https://twitter.com/AndyD_Newman/status/378581495533031424 – but that doesn’t seem to extend to the comments policy of his blog.

  10. @ Howard and Sarah

Aren’t you both members of the Labour Party?

A member of the party who joins and/or supports a political organisation other than an official Labour group or other unit of the party, or supports any candidate who stands against an official Labour candidate, or publicly declares their intent to stand against a Labour candidate, shall automatically be ineligible to be or remain a party member….

I am saddened by your failure to show the party loyalty that is expected of you as members. 😦

Besides, Andy has written for Searchlight. Surely that puts any doubts about residual Stalinism fimly to rest?

  11. ” Important thing is to return a Labour govt. That requires an inclusive coalitional approach to all parts of the party” – excluding his website, which is pre the 1832 Reform Act when it comes to “inclusion”. There must be property qualifications for commenting there. . .

  12. Waterloo Sunset: I am not a member of the Labour Party (or any other political party), but do advocate a Labour Vote. Being active in the PCS (a non-affiliated union) takes up most of my spare time, especially since my facility time has been drastically reduced by the Government.

In any case I do not see Andy Newman as a legitimate member of the Labour Party, just a cuckoo in the nest a la Militant style. I would not advocate a vote for him.

  13. Waterloo Sunset – I am not actively supporting another candidate. I also said I wouldn’t vote for Ken if I lived in London. I hope the LP will forgive me for my transgressions, particularly as I do actually do leafletting and stuff for them.

Surely “the Blobbendales”, who were regularly guests on “The Word” is more relevant here?

  15. ‘A member of the party who joins and/or supports a political organisation other than an official Labour group or other unit of the party, or supports any candidate who stands against an official Labour candidate, or publicly declares their intent to stand against a Labour candidate, shall automatically be ineligible to be or remain a party member’.

Andy Newman has done all of the above. He is an opportunist whose entryism is based purely on the fact that he has got nowhere by being a RESPECT or Gallowayite candidate.

His Stalinism, pandering to Islamist bigotry, and his tolerance of misogyny make him unfit to be a Labour candidate.

  16. Howard- Ah, if you’re not a LP member you’re fine then.

Sarah- You, on the other hand, are potentially in serious breach of party rules. The question of whether calling for people not to vote for the official LP candidate is the same as supporting a different candidate is an interesting one. I don’t think there’s much precedent either way. The internal discipline of the Labour Party is not something to take lightly!

    sackcloth and ashes-

Did he publicly do any of that while a signed up member of the Labour Party? Even if so, “but Andy did it first sir” is possibly not the most watertight defense. Describing him as an entryist is inaccurate anyway. I think you unfairly underestimate his depth of commitment to self-regarding careerism. It’s not like cosying up to Stalinists is a barrier to Labour party membership. Labour Students were closely allied to Communist Students for years (including some people currently in parliament).

Besides, you’re labouring under the misapprehension that your views of an official Labour Party candidate are somehow relevant. The rulebook is very clear on this point. It is up to the central national executive committee to interpret the rules, not rank and file members. Their role is to vote and to canvass, certainly in no way should they have uncleared opinions! The rich man at his castle, the poor man at his gate…

  17. If you really think that a bunch of middle class grauniad readers are Marxist you are about as politically astute as Nigel Farragio. Are you Dale Maily?
