Andrew Bridgen stripped of Tory whip over Covid vaccine comments

has had the Conservative Party whip removed after having “crossed a line” in his criticism of the Covid-19 vaccine.

The North West Leicestershire MP has been increasingly vocal in remarks questioning the coronavirus vaccine.

On Wednesday he tweeted an article on vaccines, adding: “As one consultant cardiologist said to me, this is the biggest crime against humanity since the Holocaust.”

Chief whip Simon Hart said: “Andrew Bridgen has crossed a line, causing great offence in the process.

“As a nation, we should be very proud of what has been achieved through the vaccine programme. The vaccine is the best defence against Covid that we have.

  1. The Faragist loons commenting below the line at the Spectator are saying his suspension is the “end of free speech in the UK” and comparing it (seriously!) to the way Hitler treated opposition !

    • The great irony of their endless utterly inappropriate invocations of Hitler and the Nazis, of course, is that on the matter of whether rap can be a genuinely British form of expression, if you swap “rap” for “jazz” and “British” for “German”, they’re the ones who sound like Nazis!

  2. Can anyone think of an MP in any party whose reputation and standing has been enhanced by his or her embrace of Twitter?

    • Knowing a little but about MPs and not just local ones, or people on our side of the left – before Twitter existed I could cite the example of when John Prescott phoned me up at about ten in the evening (an amiable chat, but not a time one would expect), or the mad letter I once got from David Blunkett threatening to sue me – I would say that they would be better kept well away from it except for quasi-official statements.

      • It’s that fatal combination of provocation from random critics, the ability to respond before engaging the brain, and the temptation to hold forth on things they know little about… I simply can’t fathom why they would want to fritter away their political capital by blundering into that minefield. And yet they do…

        • There was a programme series in the 15 mins slot after the News at One on Radio Four (when I usually listen to the BBC) a few weeks ago about people feeling they have to immediately respond to news stories. And the risks one can run in this,

Obviously this would not apply to measured commentators, coughs, like our good selves, but one can see the perils for those in elected office.

  4. The ignorant jerk Bridgen also claims that mRNA vaccines are a form of gene therapy. a simple explanation of why he’s completely wrong: https://www.genomicseducation.hee.nhs.uk/blog/why-mrna-vaccines-arent-gene-therapies/?fbclid=IwAR0Jlk9-eopEwtAbfXZItBHbK0xYHlGOjMnXhYoWre9b7Q8an7vxe8bb67M

    • mRNA vaccines are one of the greatest gifts to humanity in recent times. We should all collectively thank Pfizer and Moderna for their benevolent, altruistic protection. It also shows the genius to the public/private finance and cooperation. This is the way to run Capitalism. It combines the dynamism and inventiveness of the Private sector and the solidity and safety of State funding with democratic oversight. We must really thank to the kindness of the Biden administration and his enlightened, progressive, left-wing leadership (he is almost certainly running in 2024, thank god !). It is notable that nations that relied on traditional vaccines have been hit hard by the virus and have had to resort to overly draconian lock downs (China being a notable example).

    • The far-right/tankie love affair that has grown up in recent years based on their shared appreciation of anti-west dictators is hilarious.
