Police Probe into Piers Corbyn’s Vaccination-Auschwitz Leaflets.

with 2 comments

Arrests at UK anti-lockdown protest attended by Piers Corbyn

Compares Covid-19 vaccination efforts to the concentration camp at Auschwitz.

Many people know that Piers Corbyn was a left-wing activist. His squatting campaigning even got him in the early BBC 4 series, Lefties, (2005).  As a student at Imperial College he became a member of the International Marxist Group in the 1970s, was a Labour councillor (`1986 – 90)  and has been well-kown as an activist in Southwark for a long time. He was in short for decades, part of the  Labour/radical left that his brother has been in. Thousands of thousands of us on the left have seen him speak, and many have met him.

Corbyn’s views on Climate Change, which he developed in the new millenium (openly from around 2008)  led to an end of his direct links with the organised left. He began by sending E-Mails about his is weather forecasting operation, Weather Action, to a wide range of leftists (including the writer of this Blog). It developed into his appearance in the far-right Express, which persisted for some years (Why is the Daily Express still quoting this crank in its weather stories? 2015).

In 2013 this had caught people’s attention,

Boris Johnson has become a real embarrassment to London’s scientific community after his latest outburst of climate change ‘scepticism’,

it seems that the only person Johnson consults on this issue is his friend Piers Corbyn, who rejects the overwhelming evidence that rising atmospheric levels of greenhouse gases is driving the unambiguous rise in global average temperatures, and instead holds the sun directly responsible for trends in the Earth’s climate.

Boris Johnson’s climate change “scepticism” is an embarrassment to London’s scientists

This offers an overview:

Piers Corbyn is an astrophysicist who regularly speaks at climate science denial events. He is founder and director of the weather forecasting company WeatherAction[3][4][5]

Corbyn bases his forecasts on activity happening on the surface of the sun. He claims the sun is the main driver behind changes in global temperature, rather than human activities and the burning of fossil fuels. [6]

His younger brother is Jeremy Corbyn MP, former leader of the UK’s Labour Party. There is no indication that Jeremy Corbyn shares Piers’ views on climate change, with Labour strongly committing to action on climate change in its latest party manifesto. [7]

Corbyn characterises climate science as a tool of “globalists” and sees George Soros as a kingpin in a global movement of “globalist elites” who are using climate science as a cover for deindustrialising the West. He has appeared at events alongside conspiracy theorists, including Holocaust denier Nicholas Kollerstrom. [8][9]

Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, Corbyn has been at the forefront of promoting misinformation and conspiracy theories about Covid-19, and has led and attended a number of anti-lockdown protests.

Piers Corbyn has declared Covid 19 is a “hoax”, been an anti-lockdown campaigner and is antivaccine.

His antics have been widely covered in the media.

Corbyn has become a anti globalist conspiracy theorist, has been involved with a variety of odd-balls from that camp,, many of whom are on the far right, has got fined and has had many brushes with the law.

He is now involved in this:

MP welcomes police probe of Piers Corbyn leaflet comparing Covid vaccine to Auschwitz

Evening Standard.

An MP welcomed a police investigation launched into a leaflet designed by Jeremy Corbyn’s brother Piers that likened Covid-19 vaccine efforts to the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz.

The pamphlet had been hand-delivered in several areas, including Jewish homes in Barnet, north London and to residents in Southwark, south London.

It carried a cartoon of the extermination camp where 1.1 million people were murdered between 1940 and 1945.

A sketch of the entrance to Auschwitz in which the gates’ infamous slogan “Arbeit macht frei” (Work sets you free) was changed to “Vaccines are safe path to freedom”.

Southwark Labour MP Neil Coyle said: “I’m glad the police are investigating this offensive material and I hope a prosecution is secured.

“It is important to prevent this offensive Holocaust imagery and appalling anti-vaccine nonsense being circulated.”

Mr Coyle said he had heard of cases where leaflet teams knocked on people’s doors and made them come to their doorstep to talk in an apparent breach of Covid-19 stay-at-home laws.

He urged anyone with information about such cases to report them to the Met on 101 or online.

Matthew Doyle, a Southwark resident and former Labour Party aide at 10 Downing Street, said: “I was shocked to get one of Piers Corbyn’s vile leaflets through the door.

The Guardian has a report,

The leaflets were described by a London council as an attempt to play on the fears of some residents, particularly people from black and minority ethnic backgrounds who are among those most at risk from Covid-19. They feature a sketch of the entrance to Auschwitz in which the gates’ infamous slogan “Arbeit macht frei” (Work sets you free) has been changed to read “Vaccines are safe path to freedom”.

Inside, there are baseless claims such as the conspiracy theory that some vaccines contain nanochip technology which will enable recipients to be electronically tracked. They bear the name of Corbyn, a weather forecaster, and that of his website, where the leaflets appear in digital form.

“Shameful disinformation of this sort dampens our efforts to help save lives,” said Councillor Kieron Williams, the leader of Southwark council, who said the authority had reported the matter to the police.

Since Corbyn’s climate change denial the left, radical onwards, has broken its ties with him. But the far-right conspiracy leaflets Corbyn has distributed for some time,  his links with far right figures in recent years, culminating with the present leaflets with an anti-Semitic overtow, have brought the issue back to the fore. It is good that Southwark Labour MP Neil Coyle and the Borough Labour Council have spoken out. It is not illegitimate to ask other left-wingers, including,  his brother who comes from the same left Labour/radical left, to say something.

Socialist Worker on Rozzers’ Undercover Infiltration of the Left in anti-Vietnam War Protests.

Protesting against the Vietnam War in London, March 1968 | Kmflett's Blog

“The incompetence of the British left is notorious, and officers must take care not to get into a position where they achieve prominence in an organisation through natural ability.””

Coppers’ Report.

where they achieve prominence in an organisation through natural ability.”

How the spy cops were set up to infiltrate the left

Simon Basketter looks at documents from the undercover cops inquiry that show how the spies mobilised against the anti-Vietnam War movement

Up to 25,000 people took part in a protest outside the US Embassy in London’s Grosvenor Square on 17 March 1968.

Parliament and the press fumed with growing paranoia as the revolts of the year entered Britain.

The Guardian reported, “The demonstrators seemed determined to stay until they provoked a violent response.”

The Home Office and the Metropolitan Police Service demanded more information on the coming revolution.

One cop claimed, “We underestimated how many were coming. We were ill-equipped at the time and couldn’t bring enough men in to control it consequently when the violence erupted. We were amateurs then.”

Note this,

By the time the October 1968 Vietnam demo came round, Dixon predicted less trouble than had been seen in March.

The VSC was led by the orthodox Trotskyists of the International Marxist Group.

It also encompassed the International Socialists and some members of the Young Communist League.

They wanted the march to be peaceful and finish at a rally in Hyde Park. Maoists wanted a more direct confrontation in Grosvenor Square.

In the end the VSC march went off peacefully.

Excellent stuff though oddly they do not mention the quote that heads the present post.

More here:

These are extremely serious issues:

Much of the detail about the Vietnam protests and infiltration is already known

Spycops in context: Beneath the undercover policing scandal

From 1968 to 2008, the Metropolitan Police ran a secret unit – the Special Demonstration Squad (SDS) – dedicated to full-time, long-term undercover infiltration of a wide array of radical political organisations. From 1999-2011, the Association of Chief Police Officers joined in with its own nation-wide squad, the National Public Order Intelligence Unit (NPOIU).

In the report there is mention of infiltration in the VSC (Vietnam Solidarity Campaign, anarchists, ‘Maoists’ the RSSF (Revolutionary Students),and the IMG,

“This study paper is based on experience gained over the
last four months: it does not pretend to explore all the
problems posed when Police officers are utilised for the
close infiltration of extremist organisations, but attempts
to lay down basic principles for that type of operation.
Appendix ‘A’ gives the suggested layout of an organisation
to be set up for the purpose: Appendix ‘B’ describes in
outline how officers currently employed in this way are

World’s Oldest Trotksyist Group Denounces “Witch hunt by liberals against Trump.”

with 4 comments

An Honourable Past.

The American Socialist Workers Party is the world’s oldest Trotskyist group.

Old enough to be mentioned by George Orwell. (1)

It was founded at the end of 1937.

Their paper, The Militant (the original one) goes back to 1928.

The writings of its leading figure at the time, James Patrick “Jim” Cannon (1890 – 1974), form the basic reading of Trotskyists to this day.

Many know the pages of the History of American Trotskyism, 1928–38, Report of a Participant and The struggle for a proletarian party  (1943) practically (or literally) by heart.

It should be made clear that this Blog comes from a very different, European, background, associated with the sterling figure of Michael Pablo, (1911 – 1996) somebody Cannon opposed root and branch in the 1953 – 4 split in the Trotskyist movement’s largest international grouping, the Fourth International (FI).

Apart from its role in the upper levels of the FI (not formally affiliated due to US law)  the US SWP was directly engaged in various parts of the world wide movement.

The US SWP had a small group, called The Tendency, inside the International Marxist Group during the 1970s.

Uncharitably called a ‘cult’ by well-wishers such as the writer of this post and his mates, they formed the basis for the present Communist League.

Their best known figure is  Jonathan Silberman who hit the headlines not long ago when he in 2015 he announced his intention of standing for the London May contest. (Communist spells out policy to compete in next year’s mayoral election).

Alas, he did not stand.

But Peter Clifford stood for them in the 2017 General Election in Manchester Gorton where he won 27 votes.

If one multiplies this by the number of constituencies in the UK this makes a more impressive sounding 17550 potential votes for the Communist League.

For those interested one may see people selling the US paper cited below on their stall at demos, next to felt-tip written placards produced by a teenage creative writing class.

Yes, everybody who comes these currents have evolved over the years.

The US SWP, according to many reports, has evolved the most.

This marks a further stage in their development:

Witch hunt by liberals against Trump a danger to workers

As President Donald Trump continues to win support for improvements on jobs and production and in foreign policy, the liberal media, Democrats and some Republicans are trying to breathe life into their waning efforts to overturn the 2016 election and drive him from office. They have seized on the conviction of his former campaign manager Paul Manafort, a plea bargain by Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen, and the president’s decision to revoke ex-CIA boss John Brennan’s security clearance.

After some dreary stuff we get to the meat, the real ‘low down’ as they say…

Assaults on free speech and freedom of assembly are being carried out today. They’re being organized by a layer of Trump’s liberal opponents, like Maxine Waters, who urges mob attacks on government officials to hound them from public life.

In a series of coordinated editorial columns, the liberal owners of some 350 newspapers around the country claimed the president was attacking press freedom when he tweets about fake news.

But Trump’s remarks have nothing to do with imposing constraints on the press. More and more of these papers have given up any pretense at printing “news,” instead running article after article arguing with Trump and calling him a liar.

As they trade conjectures about the effects the court rulings on Manafort and Cohen, and “treason” calls by Brennan, will have, most bourgeois commentators agree there’s little chance Trump will be indicted or successfully removed from office.

Their conclusions? All out for the Democrats in 2018! And, if they have to, against Donald Trump in 2020.

The Socialist Workers Party is fielding candidates across the country, speaking out about the capitalist rulers’ assaults on working people and the oppressed, and championing labor battles and social protests. The party explains that the road forward is for the working class to break with all the parties of the capitalist rulers and chart a course to take political power into their own hands.
