As Britain and France prepare for War where does the left stand?

‘Perfidious Albion’: Napoléon Macron and his British nemesis, Admiral Johnson.

Is it a coincidence that the day after the Bicentenary of Napoléons death that Britain and France are again close to war? Or that today is an election day in the UK?

Two Royal Navy ships are patrolling waters around Jersey and two French patrol vessels are nearby, as fishermen protest over their post-Brexit rights.

About 60 French and Jersey boats are blocking the island’s St Helier port, with a freight vessel unable to leave.

Suffolk’s Top News Site reports:

Where does the UK left stand? Is our main enemy at home? Or is it, as the Morning Star might say, the neoliberal imperialism of the EU member France? Some Campists state, “Critical support for degenerated Republican France versus the thoroughly rotten from top to bottom constitutional monarchy of Britain in this conflict.”

  1. And now, given the weight of the populist drum on the enervated mind of the electorate, even Labour has to whimperingly back the gunboat diplomacy, even though at 2.30 pm on a polling day afternoon, it’ll make precious little difference anyway.

  2. Seeing as the Channel Islands are geographically closer to France than Great Britain why not give them to France? Problem solved.

    • To be consistent with past positions they should be calling for a socialist federation of Britain and France but this might smack of a lefty version of the EU they demanded the UK leave. Hard to argue with the fact the dispute would not have arisen except for the policy they supported. Nationalist division has a habit of keeping on dividing, although they probably wouldn’t welcome that comment either.

  4. These are dangerous waters for the socialist left. Nothing is more guaranteed to put off the average citizen and voter, than some tone-deaf piece of unpatriotic diatribe about how dreadful the British are. How they deserve whatever they get, and why can’t they be more like Iran or Russia etc,
There are people on the left who seem to be actually proud of attacking their own country at every opportunity. And every time they shout ”Cruel Britannia”, the Conservatives are smiling.

  5. And I’m sure we will look at the entrails later, what of the NIP Whippets at Hartlepool ? 8th place after a near fascist. 250 votes – 2 ahead of a former convicted sex criminal. And that after enough over hyped web traffic activity from the soi-disant left to keep a whole internet server station busy for weeks. Far, far bigger things than that of course, but it did give a little bit of vicarious satisfaction to a dreadful result overall

    • Taking that and Jim’s comments here and on FB we need some serious debate on the election and this defeat.

But, 8th place….so much for taking the Whippets seriously.
