“Qasem Soleimani, the hated commander of the Islamic Republic’s Quds Force” – Worker-communist Party of Iran.

The Stop the War Coalition responded differently.

The assassination of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani is an act of war by Donald Trump. The act was carried out in Baghdad, violating all agreements with the Iraqi government. Both Iran and Iraq will retaliate. Trump has been heading for war since tearing up the nuclear deal with Iran and if he succeeds will create a bigger war than we have seen in the Middle East. It will draw in major players across the region including Israel, Saudi Arabia and possibly Russia.

This is the bloody result of two decades of war started by the US after 9/11. Those of us who said war in Iraq would lead to endless conflict and misery were absolutely right to do so. And those who justified those wars are now looking on while the situation escalates.

We must do everything we can to oppose war with Iran – and attacks on Iraq if it demands the withdrawal of US troops.

Lindsey German.

German says not a word about this war criminal’s actions.

Statement of the Worker-communist Party of Iran:

Qasem Soleimani, the hated commander of the Islamic Republic’s Quds Force has been killed

In the early hours of today, Qasem Soleimani, along with a number of key commanders of the Quds Force, and of Hashd Al-Shaabi and Kata’ib Hezbollah, including Kata’ib’s chief commander Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis, were killed in a drone strike near Baghdad Airport. The attack comes after clashes between the US and the Islamic Republic forces in Iraq over the past few days. The death of Qasem Soleimani, who was the absolute commander of the Quds Force and one of the most powerful commanders of the Islamic Republic’s Pasdaran paramilitary force (IRGC), is a deadly blow to the Islamic Republic – in Iran, in the region and particularly in Iraq.

Soleimani was one of the most vicious terrorists of the Islamic regime, playing a key role in the organisation of terror groups in Syria, Yemen and particularly in Iraq. He was the architect and organiser of Hashd Al-Shaabi and other Islamic gangs in Iraq and in effect led the suppression of the Iraqi people and their uprising. His killing will no doubt delight the people of Iraq and Iran who detest the Islamic Republic and are engaged in a daily fight with this regime and its mercenaries. People of Iran share in the happiness of the people of Iraq, who have come out dancing and celebrating on the streets of Baghdad.

Following the killing of Qasem Soleimani, the Islamic Republic will no doubt step up its attempts to incite military clashes between the Islamic forces and the American army in the region, and in particular in Iraq. However, the revolutionary people of Iraq and the power of Tahrir Square, which have already driven the fading Iraqi state into a total political crisis and deadlock, will not allow the warlike attempts of the Islamic Republic to succeed. The victim of such attempts will ultimately be the Islamic Republic itself.

The main response of the people of Iran to the rants of the leaders of the Islamic Republic, aimed at militarising and terrorising the social climate, and the way to confront the dangers of a conflict between Islamic terrorism and American militarism, is to step up the struggle for the overthrow of the Islamic Republic in Iran and its expulsion from Iraq, which is a key demand of the people of Iraq.

Victory to the revolution of the people of Iraq!

Down with the Islamic Republic!

  1. The [Iranian opposition] Association for Defence of Peace, Solidarity & Democracy warned that any war on Iran would inevitably strengthen the grip of its theocratic regime “and thus weaken the people’s struggle for human and democratic rights and social justice.”

  2. The politically ‘centrist’ US veterans organisation Vote Vets, supporters of presidential candidate Buttigieg, right-wing Democrat, reacted:

As you saw in last night’s breaking news, tensions between the United States and Iran have reached their most dangerous point yet in the Trump Presidency.

The death of Iranian Special Forces General Qassem Soleimani has set us on the path to a war with Iran — one that the United States Congress has NOT given the President authorization to declare. What happened last night is the latest result of President Trump’s erratic foreign policy.

Sign the petition to demand Congress act immediately to stop war with Iran:

We need to continue our work to elevate the voices of our 700,000+ members to prevent a devastating war with Iran.

President Trump ran for office on a promise to put an end to the Forever Wars. But his decision to withdraw from the Iran Nuclear Deal and subsequently escalate tensions with Iran has brought us to the brink of a new and devastating neoconservative conflict.

This not only greatly escalates things with Iran and puts us closer to war — it complicates our relationship with the Iraqis, who are allied with Iran, and imperils our fight against ISIS.

In short, Donald Trump just made things worse for U.S. security and troops.

We need to act now to send a message to Donald Trump: This act was reckless and endangers all U.S. forces. Click here to sign our petition and demand Congress act now to stop war with Iran:

Help us take action to stop another multibillion-dollar war that results in countless dead American troops while hurting U.S. security.

Your support is critical right now. Thanks for signing our petition.

  3. This is pretty good,

“Iraq’s worst fears have come true – they are now at the centre of a proxy war between the US and Iran.”

    Patrick Cockburn

“A few days after I had spoken to them, there was a small demonstration in central Baghdad demanding jobs, public services and an end to corruption. The security forces and the pro-Iranian paramilitaries opened fire, killing and wounding many peaceful demonstrators. Though Qais al-Khazali later claimed that he and other Hashd leaders were trying to thwart a US-Israeli conspiracy, he had said nothing to me about it. It seemed likely that General Soleimani wrongly suspected that the paltry demonstrations were a real threat and had ordered the pro-Iranian paramilitaries to open fire and put a plan for suppressing the demonstrations into operation. ”

“General Soleimani died in the wake of his greatest failure and misjudgement. But the manner of his killing may convince many Shia Iraqis that the threat to Iraqi independence from the US is greater than that from Iran. The next few days will tell if the protest movement, which has endured the violence used against it with much bravery, will be deflated by the killings at Baghdad airport.”

  4. ” “The joy expressed by some at the death of the criminal reactionary Qassem Soleimani is understandable, given his role in repressing revolutionary popular classes in Iran, Syria, Iraq and in expanding Iran’s militarism and influence in the region. However, his assassination represents nothing affirmative for the popular uprisings in Iraq and the region.”

In the face of all these developments, opposition to U.S. imperialism’s air strikes and war threats against Iran and Iraq can only be effective when rooted in solidarity with the progressive and revolutionary forces in the Middle East and North African region and full opposition to all the authoritarian governments and imperialists powers in the region.

We oppose all global and regional imperialists and authoritarians

“This action by the U.S. follows a December 31 assault by thousands of protesters mobilised and organised by pro-Iranian militias known as “al-Hashd al-Sha’bi” (also known as Popular Mobilization Forces) entering Baghdad’s heavily protected Green Zone and breaking into the U.S. embassy and burning the reception area, in response to December 29 U.S. airstrikes on Iranian-backed Kataib Hezbollah militia bases on the Iraq and Syria border which killed 25 and injured 50 militia members.”

  6. Trump’s actions have immediately saved the vile Iranian regime. The regime which for months has been facing protests by thousands of its people has now been thrown a lifeline by Trump, because those thousands of people are now marching instead demanding “Death To America”. The people of Iraq and Iran know that no matter how much they hate their own vile regimes their escape from those regimes does not come from the hands of Trump or US imperialism.

It is that same imperialism that has no qualms about supporting the vile feudal regimes in the Gulf, for example, or indeed, for Trump in his relations with the vile regimes of Putin or Kim. As Trotsky pointed out in relation to the Balkan Wars, in his opposition to imperialist intervention on the lying basis of humanitarian and liberal intervention, the route to freedom lies only in the hands of the peoples of those countries themselves backed only by the workers and their organisations in the rest of the world.

The main benefit we in the West can provide to the people of Iran and Iraq, and Syria, as well as other places like Libya, Venezuela and so on, is to ensure that our own imperialist butchers keep their hands off them!!!

  7. To Boffy:

When in the Netherlands, Pim Fortuin started 21st century political Dutch political Islamophobia and other political xenophobia, he was just one of many politicians. But then, an apolitical animal welfare supporter decided to murder Fortuin. That made Fortuin, undeservedly but it happened, a hero and a martyr in the eyes of many people who would never have voted for Fortuin otherwise. Posthumously, there was a big election victory for his party, which entered the government.

Likewise, many people who up to now were not fans of General Solaimani, now after Trump’s murder, also of other ‘collateral damage’ people at Baghdad civilian airport whom you don’t hear about in corporate media, now started to consider Solaimani a hero and martyr. People in Iraq, Iran, and Kargil, Jammu and Kashmir, India (where the Hindu supremacist government of Modi bloodily oppresses Muslim people):

  9. Back in the day folks read Pravda, hastily translated into English and sold for a bomb. Reagan-era news went Ronbo/Maggie baaad, socialist goood, and there was unanimity–at least among the looter intelligentzia. Then came SDI which Pravda called “Star Wars”… bad call. From day day forward people liked and wanted Second Amendment antimissiles. Lately the 1960 Soviet predictions for 2017 were called “Global Warming.” Another bad call… and unanimity is again breaking down like a scene out of a Yevgeny Zamyatin novel. Oh well…

  10. In a horrible way the assassination has buttressed all the wrong people. The rulers of Iran and the government of Iraq have won temporary respite against the demands of their own peoples. Suleimani in death has weakened the US position far more than he did in life. Trump will get impeachment off the front pages and hopes for a poll bounce before the election. A sun tanned Boris will equivocate but he has to get that trade deal with Donald. I do not think that it will be a Sarajevo moment but the situation and the President are so unstable that it is scary.
