Labour List reports.

Lansman Slams Left Rival CLPD Slate For Key Disciplinary Committee

Momentum chief Jon Lansman has attacked the slate put forward by left-wing group Campaign for Labour Party Democracy for Labour’s key disciplinary committee.

This morning, CLPD published its slate of candidates – also backed by Jewish Voice for Labour (JVL) and the Labour Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (LCND) – in the contest for the national constitutional committee (NCC).

The three left-wing organisations have endorsed Kaneez AktharAnnabelle HarleGary Heather, JVL activist Stephen Marks, lawyer Khaled Moyeed and Cecile Wright.

But Lansman tweeted his disapproval of the South East/London-centrism of the CLPD slate, adding: “I regret that CLPD launched their campaign today without agreement.” Pre-empting a meeting due to be held later today, he confirmed that Momentum would be supporting a different set of NCC candidates.

Momentum were in negotiations with CLPD and other Labour left groups to put together a single left-wing NCC slate and were surprised by the CLPD announcement this morning, LabourList understands.

The Momentum chair’s open criticism of CLPD follows a row held during the summer over the candidacy of Pete Willsman for Labour’s national executive committee (NEC). Momentum dropped their endorsement of Willsman after a recording of his comments on antisemitism leaked – but CLPD remained supportive of his bid, which was ultimately successful.

Stephen Marks, a member of controversial group Jewish Voice for Labour, is thought to be one of the choices Momentum is not inclined to back. Like Willsman, Marks has previously denied claims of antisemitism within Labour, and in 2016 he signed a letter describing such accusations as “part of a wider campaign against the Labour leadership”. However, a Momentum source denied the report by Skwawkbox that “Momentum representatives” tried to “veto” Marks at meetings earlier this week.

The Skwawky one has just said.

BREAKING: MOMENTUM SET TO ANNOUNCE OWN SLATE LATER TODAY

Momentum founder Jon Lansman has cited concerns about the geographical balance of the CLPD slate, but says that Momentum had been prepared to back Jewish Voice for Labour’s (JVL) Stephen Marks although Lansman personally expressed concerns.

I shall only make one comment: it seems that Lansman actually knows Stephen Marks. and is aware of his recent political behaviour…

  1. If this is Steve Marks formerly of the IS of the 1970s, as a former IMGer of the same period , I could recommend the man highly enough.

  3. Here is a ‘taster’ of one of my many articles on ‘anti-Semitism’ in the Labour Party.

You can read the full article here:

    Enjoy!

Frankie Boyle: Your new show betrayed Gaza

    Dear Frankie Boyle,

I’d prefer not to be writing this as an open letter, but you didn’t leave me much choice: I can no longer engage with you on Twitter because you blocked me (and many hundreds of others, it seems) for criticising the first episode of your New World Order TV show on Friday.

Since then, having purged your Twitter feed of critics, you have created a series of straw men. In the worst, you have suggested that those unhappy with the show are really closet racists for objecting to the fact that you spent half of your 30-minute schedule allowing your guests, led by David Baddiel, to flay Jeremy Corbyn for a supposed anti-semitism “crisis” in the Labour party. Presumably that offers you a comfortingly circular proof of Labour’s anti-semitism problem.

Another straw man is that those criticising you are simply Corbyn devotees defending their man. Well, that’s certainly not true in my case. Like you, I am dissatisfied with the Labour party as a vehicle for real change, and I think Corbyn is too moderate on a range of issues. But he is also a blast of fresh air in British politics, and the only party leader in living memory who has put anti-racism – and class solidarity – at the heart of his political agenda.

Which may be why some of us were infuriated watching a show hosted by you – probably the only true dissident currently given a show on mainstream TV – trash Corbyn in exactly the same terms used over the past two years by every section of the corporate media, from the Daily Mail and the Times to the Guardian and the BBC. Even were these anti-semitism allegations grounded in a verifiable reality, we really don’t need Frankie Boyle indulging prejudices we’ve heard almost every day since Corbyn was elected Labour leader.

  4. The meeting promoting Jenny Manson as a PPC with John McDonnell tonight has been vetoing Jews from attending. A number of people who purchased tickets have these cancelled, as have the press credentials of Jewish News. They must have googled all the attendees! Juden Verboten form the JVL Greenfuhrer must be proud.

  5. JVL which began life as (supposedly) a fairly amorphous pro-Corbyn group of Jewish Labour Party members and whose founder Jenny Manson even wrote to the Guardian denying they were “anti-Zionist” has become a repository of ‘absolute’ anti-Zionism and denialism, even willing to associate with Greenstein and ‘Labour Against the Witch Hunt’. Marks is part of this ‘denialist’ current and should not be supported.

  6. From Jewish News:

Jewish News journalist banned from event with John McDonnell and JVL chair

Paper’s reporter told they’re uninvited to ‘head-to-head’ meeting between the shadow chancellor and Jenny Manson

    By Jenni Frazer 

Jenny Manson, the chair of Jewish Voice for Labour, has caused uproar in north-west London after a number of people due to come and see her in conversation with Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell were arbitrarily banned on the night before the event.

Ms Manson and Mr McDonnell were due to hold a “head-to-head” event as part of the activist’s bid to win Labour nomination to run for an unspecified seat in Barnet. There has been speculation that she may run either in Chipping Barnet or in the “flashpoint” seat of Finchley and Golders Green, currently held by the Conservative MP Mike Freer.

On Wednesday night, just before midnight, numbers of people — some known as pro-Israel activists, some not — received emails from “Jenny’s Campaign Team” informing them that their ticket order to attend the event had been cancelled.

Two journalists, Etan Smallman and this reporter, were told that the cancellation was due to “no media accreditation” having been requested.

But the Jewish News, which applied for the ticket for this reporter, said that there had been no separate opportunity on the ticket application to attend as media.

Among those refused a ticket are understood to be well-known activists such as Jonathan Hoffman, Richard Millett, David Collier, Euan Phillips of Labour Against Antisemitism and others such as Joanne Bell and Gillian Lazarus.

Days before the event ticket-holders were sent an email by the conference organisers, which indicated, for those willing to read between the lines, that a tight rein was going to be kept on the content of the discussion. Ticket-holders were advised: “Please note that despite inaccurate reports in the media this is not a JVL organised event (or a Barnet Momentum one though we do use some resources as some of us are members of BM) but it is being run by Jenny Manson’s friends and supporters. Both organisations do of course support Jenny, and some LP members are also members of one or both organisations”.

The notification continued: “In general the event is meant to cover a variety of domestic Labour policy issues directly related to the economy, the financial crash, resulting austerity measures, housing, poverty, the justice system, privatisation and nationalisation, taxation/government revenue, social care provision, etc. If these topics are of no interest to you then we don’t want you to come all the way and feel disappointed. So, again, please be considerate and cancel your order if you think this is not the event for you so we can issue the ticket to someone else”.

In other words, Labour and antisemitism were not on the agenda for discussion. But Mr McDonnell, who was keen to “draw a line” under Labour’s woes with antisemitism, may now find that his embrace of Jewish Voice for Labour’s leading light has in fact focused the issue all the more strongly.

Jenny Manson’s campaign team has been contacted for comment.

  7. NoisyMasion, it is indeed him, IS mate of John Palmer, GLC associated, former editor of Catalyst of the Socialist Society, and a variety of posts in Oxfordshire Labour.

Also, as Jim points out, whatever his honourable past, the man now defends, vociferously, Tony Greenstein, vociferously denies that anti-semitism exists in the Labour Party (no doubt based on extensive research in the dreaming spires…) and is..er…vociferous.

Just the calm and collected voice one needs on the Labour Party Disciplinary Committee.

  8. Is it two, three or is it four slates?

The august organ of Labour Party Marxists/CPGB Provisional Central Committee says 3.

Three left slates for NCC elections?

The Centre-left Grassroots Alliance (CLGA) seems to have finally imploded. The organisation is currently embroiled in crisis over the candidates it should select for the newly expanded National Constitutional Committee. The winking out of existence of this shady organisation is long overdue.

  9. Since Jonathan Hoffman and his merry crew regularly hang around with Paul Besser, the ‘Information minister’ of the neo-Nazi Britain First, they should be regarded as fascists and excluded from all left events.

Allowing supporters and symps of Britain First into Labour events could be literally suicidal. The murderer of Jo Cox, Thomas Mair, was a supporter of Britain First

  10. CLPD have backed Stephen Marks, a Jewish Voice for Labour (JVL) activist who has voiced opposition to the Jewish Labour Movement (JLM) and can be fairly put in the ‘antisemitism complaints are part of a campaign against Corbyn’ camp. (Here’s a letter he signed saying just that.)

  11. To my Woodstock Nation eyes, the left&right squabbles look more and more like spite-fights between looters who love Jesus versus looters who don’t. The idea of leaving someone be never occurs to either faction.
