Fascist Gammon Rally For Robinson.

Far-right activists stage violent protest calling for Tommy Robinson to be freed

The Independent.

Five people have been arrested during a violent protest that saw crowds of Tommy Robinson supporters in a tense stand-off with riot police.

Hundreds of far-right demonstrators descended on the capital on Saturday afternoon, occupying the road around Trafalgar Square.

Supporters chanted “Free Tommy Robinson” and hurled missiles and smoke bombs at police. Right-wing Dutch politician Geert Wilders also delivered a speech.

The protest is the latest in what appears to be a bid to secure the former English Defence League (EDL) leader’s release from jail.

A spokeswoman for megasightseeing.com said: “Our London sightseeing bus was on its normal route when it got caught up in the demonstrations.

“The bus was stormed by demonstrators and the driver and a small number of customers got off.

“The demonstrators have caused a significant amount of damage to the bus which meant it had to be towed away.

“We have reported this to the police and will help them with any investigations.”

The report adds,

Dutch far-right MP Geert Wilders, who campaigned last year to become Dutch Prime Minister, was among those attending, as was UKIP leader Gerard Batten.

The demonstration has been picked up internationally:

Libération: Heurts au cours d’une manifestation de l’extrême droite à Londres

Le Parisien Londres : une manifestation de l’extrême droite dégénère

Here is some footage (Russia Today carried a live stream).

Anti-fascists are concerned at the size of the rally.

But there were anti-fascists there to protest against the fascist mob.

Hope not Hate states,

The demonstration, which started at Trafalgar Square before marching down Whitehall, saw speeches from Dutch Islamophobe Geert Wilders, The For Britain Movement’s Anne Marie Waters, former Breitbart London editor Raheem Kassam, co-founder of the EDL Kevin Carroll and several others.

The event was held to demand the release of Stephen Yaxley-Lennon after he was jailed last month for jeopardizing a just outcome in an ongoing court case.

The crowd, possibly as many as 10,000, was extremely hostile towards the police and violence erupted with a group of roughly 500 demonstrators going on a rampage near Trafalgar Square. Bottles, sticks and cones were hurled at police officers and vehicles were attacked. At one point the police were outnumbered and forced to flee the scene in a hail of flying projectiles, pursued by the angry mob.

Another group of angry demonstrators attempted to force their way into Downing Street but were held at bay by the police.

The rally is the latest in a series of street demonstrations with Lennon as figurehead, marking an ongoing cooperation across the British far right around an anti-Muslim agenda.

Upon Lennon’s incarceration there were ugly protests outside Downing Street, but today was the largest event organised in his support.

Like previous events such as the Day For Freedom, todays event saw groups from across the far right come together around a single issue. In attendance today were activists from the EDL, UKIP, For Britain, the FLA, and a contingent of roughly 10 people from Generation Identity, among others.

Also on the demonstration were a number of notable far-right activists including the Holocaust denier Nicholas Kollerstrom and Luke Nash-Jones from Make Britain Great Again.

Wilders, founder and leader of the People’s Party for Freedom (PVV), one of the largest parties in the Netherlands and one of the most prominent anti-Muslim activists in the world, whipped up the crowd and demanded the release of Lennon.

Waters, who is currently campaigning ahead of the 14 May Lewisham East parliamentary by-election, told the crowd “the globalist elites want our borders open” and that the government are “accelerating the islamisation of our country for their political gain”.

Meanwhile Raheem Kassam referenced Enoch Powell and claimed he had received a supportive text from Steve Bannon.

Kevin Carroll said that they will return to London for another demonstration on the 14th of July.

In addition to the London demonstration was a Free Tommy Robinson event in Belfast and a small event in Budapest organised by Generation Identity.

  1. Blame political correctness and the institutional discrimination against white people, especially the white working class. Yes. we do exist and we have the vote.

  2. Dave, the EDL are like the mirror image of the hard left. They both follow ideas that fall apart under the slightest scrutiny. They are often take part in violent demonstrations. The rank and file probably don’t even understand what they are following. The EDL have even appropriated the language of the hard left saying they are taking back “our streets”.
The irony for a movement that believes in law & order is that Tommy pleaded guilty. So why would they want him released?

  3. Also see this: Tommy Robinson, English nationalism and Brexit

Three things strike you when looking at videos and photos of the neo-fascist demonstration on June 9th calling for the release from prison of the Islamophobic criminal Tommy Robinson writes Andy Stowe.

The first is the numbers who turned out. 10 000 is the most frequent shared estimate. This was a massive display of racists supporting Robinson. Anyone interested in the details of why he’s in prison can find more here.

The second is the international dimension to the event. The most prominent speaker was Geert Wilders who told the crowd:

“Tommy Robinson is the greatest freedom fighter of Britain today. Tommy Robinson is a freedom fighter. He says what no-one dares to say. ” A message of support was also received from Steve Bannon and it seems there were protests outside a number of British embassies and consulates.

The third is the massive number of England flags and union jacks. It was more than just a demonstration to have a racist criminal released. It was a display of neo-fascist English nationalism which seems to mark the emergence of a new coalition. This includes Ukip MEP Gerard Batten who appears to have been inside the neo-fascist speakers’ areas; a loose organisation of football hooligans called the Football Lads’ Alliance and former members of the English Defence League. This new coalition is willing to use violence on the streets and some of them were seen attacking the police.

Stand Up To Racism (SUTR) and Unite Against Fascism (UAF) mobilised about 300 people against them. Both these groups are front organisations of the Socialist Workers Party (SWP) and receive their political direction from its leadership. They are sometimes able to get Diane Abbott or Jeremy Corbyn to speak at their events but they have no relationship with Labour Party members and many on the left are unwilling to work with them because of their leaderships’ role in dealing with an allegation of sexual assault. Whatever one’s political judgement on that view, it’s a fact which won’t go away.

Immediately after the Brexit referendum Socialist Resistance concluded that “The referendum has legitimised racism and xenophobia as never before.” The collapse of Ukip following that result provided a huge number of new votes for the Tories and cleared the path for the re-emergence of street-fighting neo-fascists in England. It’s part of the global rise of far right nationalist political formations in which we can include, in a list which is by no means exhaustive, Trump, Erdogan in Turkey, Duterte in the Philippines, Salvini in Italy, Hofer in Austria and Orbán in Hungary.

Brexit has re-enegerised British neo-fascism. The thousands of men, and people who were there say it was an almost exclusively male demonstration, now have the political confidence to occupy central London for the day. Again, people who saw them say that the neo-fascists appeared to come from the belt of predominantly white towns and counties that ring London. For the racists London is not just the political centre of England, its multi-ethnic communities, who understood what it would mean, voted overwhelmingly against their Brexit project.

An ugly truth that the British left often refuses to acknowledge is that a lot of the country’s working class and lower middle class is racist. In 2018 anti-Muslim bigotry is the main form it takes, a world view which is reinforced by Brexit supporting papers like the Daily Mail and the Sun, the house journals of mainstream British racism. These elements are now being mixed up with Steve Bannon’s project of creating an intellectually coherent new neo-fascist international current, hence his appearance at the Front National’s recent conference and his message to the mob yesterday.

British society is starkly divided over Brexit. Most Labour supporters are against it and most Tories back it. The further right in the political spectrum you go, the more violently pro-Brexit people are. And the further right you go the more violently anti-immigrant people are, literally and metaphorically.

What we saw on the streets of London was the violent face of English nationalist racism and, while 10 0000 is 10 000 too many, they are massively outnumbered by 500 0000 Labour Party members and 6.5 million trade unionists. We can sweep them from the streets and defeat them politically.

If the neo-fascists continue to organise large demonstrations the labour movement cannot continue to sub-contract dealing with them to a small Marxist propaganda party. We need to use our roots in our communities and our organisations to confront them with overwhelming numbers. Labour must start to take its voters’ enemies seriously and reclaim our streets from them and with his visit to London on July 13th Trump is giving us a great opportunity to do just that.

  4. Well I disagree and do not see fascism as a special threat to the working class. As Marx wrote, society shapes our ideas and not vice versa. So the appeal of fascism is always as a reform movement. But, in order to prevail they would need the majority of the working class to support them. So far there is little if any evidence of that.

  5. The left in this country are often just as nasty & nationalistic as the EDL. The left cheers when Western soldiers die in battles against the “oppressed”. They support Cuban, Nicaraguan & Palestinian solidarity. But why? Given that the working class are found in every country, surely they should not take sides. Beats me, but what is the difference between saying Palestine for the Palestinians & England for the English?

  9. What’s with this ‘gammon’ bollocks? Like only the over-65s have a racist bone in their bodies? An appeal to the youth that being racist ain’t trendy, it is for like old folks, get onside with whatever ever agenda is being peddled? You need to get out more then. Take a look at the demographic spread in the pictures from the ‘Free Tommy Robinson’ marches. Not a ‘gammon’ in sight! Or better still take a walk around our town centre and you will see the racist abuse being dished out kids barely out of kindergarten. And for your information using terms such as ‘gammon’ is “ageist” and is considered a “hate crime”.

  10. And what’s with describing any individual or group who dares hold a different opinion from you as “far right wing” but in the same breath showing support for those violent thugs who call themselves “Antifa”. Can you get more fascist than Antifa? This whole article is riddled with rhetorical horse-shit.

  12. The ironic thing is that one of the central tenets* of Islam, in fact ALL religions, is that there is life after death. Does anyone seriously believe that there is life after death? We fight, go to war, have mass genocides over mythical characters, old books, all based on an utter falsehood. Not even the Pope believes in life after death To quote Pope Leo: “It has served us well the myth of Christ”. Or to quote Lord Henry Wooton: “(People die of common sense one lost moment at a time.) Life is a moment. There is no hereafter. So make it burn always with the hardest flame.”

*the other central tenet is an obsession with sex

  13. No amount of ‘satire’ or latex puppets is going to demean or discredit Trump, a man who is in fact an elected American president, Chief of the armed forces and ultimately the Commander in Chief.
Trump is having an obvious effect on the world stage. Trump is America of today and tomorrow. Establishment politics are dead. Trump is correct to put these G7 puppets in their place. The cartel is no longer worthy. The special arrangements between all the G7 members, especially UK, is now over. All of the joint members criticise America, ridicule Trump. Arrogant in their stance yet stupid in the policies that are destroying the very cultures that made them individually unique. Europe is dying as it stands now, Merkel will go down in history as the architect of Europe’s cultural collapse. Germany will fall demographically as will France and possibly Spain. The state of Sweden, today, already gone, the ultimate example of a failed state and usurped culture, replaced, is the future of Europe unless the populace turn against Merkel and her like, immediately. Trump sees it for what it is, Canada on America’s border is going the same way and it’s why Americans are eyeing Macron as a fool, a very serious threat to their borders, he is a jester in presidential robes. Trudeau is a clown as is Macron. Collectively the G7 leadership could not command a scout troop.
