Turkish Backed Jihadists Demolish, “blacksmith Kawa, a legendary figure for the Kurdish movement.”

Syria war: Turkey-backed forces oust Kurds from heart of Afrin

BBC.

Turkish-backed forces have taken full control of the centre of the Syrian-Kurdish city of Afrin.

Fighters waved flags and tore down the statue of a legendary Kurdish figure after claiming the city centre on Sunday.

The two-month Turkish-led operation aimed to rid the border region of a Kurdish militia that Turkey considers a terrorist group.

Activists say 280 civilians have died, although this is denied by Ankara.

Pictures and video footage emerged of forces tearing down a Kurdish statue with a bulldozer.

The monument depicted the blacksmith Kawa, a legendary figure for the Kurdish movement.

A statement on a Whatsapp group for the Kurdish-dominated Syrian Democratic Forces called it the “first blatant violation of Kurdish people’s culture and history since the takeover of Afrin”.

A Turkish armed forces Twitter page posted a video of troops displaying the nation’s flag in Afrin’s centre.

  1. A couple of days ago Le Monde, which has covered Afrin closely, reported on the brave internationalist volunteers who intend to defend the city with their Kurdish comrades to the end.

  3. The trouble is these smaller groups are fighting a proxy war for the bigger players. The West, China, Russia, Israel, Saudi Arabia et al.
They may conquer a territory, only for the big boys to step in and take control.

  8. Well, you would not want the West to help the Kurds now would you? I know how angry you are about the West getting involved in these conflicts. But where are they getting their weapons from? Whom are the Kurds butchering?

  9. Damn, if only Theresa May had never sold Turkey those weapons, they’d never be able to butcher these Kurds. I mean Erdogan would never have tried to buy them for anywhere else would he?

  11. Free Syrian Army,

“The Free Syrian Army (FSA) is the moderate armed opposition fighting across Syria, to free the Syrian people from the Assad regime, its foreign militia and Daesh.
The FSA formed in 2011 when peaceful protests in Syria were met with violent force from Syrian government forces. Officers and military personal started to defect from the regime to form the Free Syrian Army to protect demonstrators and fight back against the use of force being used against them. Since this time, many have joined different FSA groups across Syria to defend their areas and fight for the principles that the Syrian people went to the streets for at the start of the Revolution: for freedom, dignity and justice, to change Syria from a dictatorship into a democracy. Below is a list of FSA brigades in provinces across Syria.”

  13. So who are the good guys here? Where are they getting their weapons from and whom are they killing?
It can’t be from the West, as the West is bad, so ergo anyone that gets their weapons from the West is bad.
But if not form the West, from where then?

  14. “I mean Erdogan would never have tried to buy them for anywhere else would he?” Exactly, Steve, and nowhere else would have sold them any weapons either!

And it is not like an episode of Dr Who where we KNOW who the good guys (and gals) are. Good and bad are fluid and interchangeable; sometimes even one and the same, Only God/Allah/Goodness/Insert Deity(s) of choice really KNOWS who who good guys are.

  15. Lara, I didn’t mention gals as everyone on the left knows that gals are vitreous to a fault. Apart from Thatcher of course, they all hated her…oh and Theresa May too as she sold weapons to Erdogan. But then, anyone she sells weapons to is bad.

  16. A British woman was killed whilst fighting for an all woman militia…and these are the good guys????
No thanks! What next, they’ll be arming kids. I hate to bring in Goodwins law but it the Nazis had women’s only battalions I very much we’d have hailed that as a victory for equality.
