‘I ❤ MCR’: thousands gather at Manchester attack vigil

Thousands of people waving “I heart Manchester” placards gathered in the city’s centre on Tuesday evening to show the victims of the arena atrocity that wherever they are from, “they are Manchester too”.

Albert Square, usually packed by Mancunians celebrating Premier League victories or national holidays, was filled with supporters of the city who came to show their defiance against the terror sown at a Ariana Grande concert less than 24 hours earlier.

  1. This week’s Socialist Worker carries an article on the attack on the front page. But, true to form, not a word about the (very likely) motivation of the attack other than noting that IS has claimed it: instead, paragraph after paragraph about Islamophobia. It is fair enough to warn against the racist backlash, but 22 people have not been killed in an anti-Islamic racist attack in Manchester. Just as with 9/11, the SWP can’t even condemn the attack beyond the purely descriptive adjective “horrific”. They continue be ambivalent about even the most reactionary clerical fascist atrocities, which they seem to half-believe to be based misguided but righteous anger rather than an utterly reactionary and murderous ideology which is not mitigated by being, in some circumstances, a reaction to an unjust world.

Comrades should raise this with their local SWP paper seller, if they can find one.

  2. Having spent the years since the massive 2003 Stoppers demo defending Islamist terrorism they can hardly backtrack now. Just been watching Good Morning Britain and both a former Colonel and the husband of one of the dead women have called for internment.

  3. Yesterday I heard some ex senior military figure (possibly the same one) on BBC 5 Live calling for the deportation of all foreign nationals on MI5 risk lists (despite him knowing that it was a UK citizen who committed this atrocity). “I would rather infringe the human rights of a few than see our children dying in the streets”. Unlike this person I am no military expert however I suspect that the intelligence providence of this move would cause devastating damage to ongoing operations, and I suspect he knows that too.

The conversation then moved to May’s (fake) deportation battle against Abu Qatada, forgetting her massive balls up on overseas students removals. Read “strong and stable” compared to Corbyn’s weakness on human rights and terrorism (sadly this re. the latter is mostly true).

With “dementia tax” now a distant memory it will be a Trumpian election campaign from here on in.

  4. I must say that seeing armed police patrolling the centre of Ipswich at lunchtime today gave me a bit of a shock.

  5. Unfortunately, armed police are of limited use against suicide bombers who intend to blow themselves up in crowds. They can be useful against gunmen, but so far that has not been the jihadis’ preferred way of operating in Britain. I suspect the visible armed police are mainly about the government wanting to be seen to be doing something.
