George Galloway Contests General Election Result.

with 30 comments

Galloway in a Pickle.

George Galloway to challenge election result.

Former MP George Galloway has announced he has started legal proceedings to challenge his general election defeat.

Mr Galloway, leader of the Respect Party, lost his Bradford West seat to Labour’s Naz Shah, who he has alleged made “false statements” during the campaign to affect the result.

He also claimed “widespread malpractice” involving postal voting meant the result must be “set aside”.

A Labour spokesman said the action was “pathetic and without any foundation”.

Mr Galloway won the Bradford West seat in a by-election in 2012, but lost to Ms Shah – who secured a majority of more than 11,000 in last week’s general election.

However, the bitter campaign was dogged by claims and counter-claims between Labour and Respect over a number of issues – particularly relating to Ms Shah’s family background.

Labour accused Mr Galloway of breaching election law by making false statements during the campaign.

‘Divisive politics’

A spokesman for Mr Galloway said the legal action was at an early stage.

A complaint had been made under section 106 of the Representation of the People Act 1983, which related to candidates making false statements during campaigns, the spokesman said.

In a further statement, Mr Galloway – a former Labour MP – said: “It has come to my notice that there has been widespread malpractice in this election, particularly over postal voting.

“We are in the process of compiling the information which will form part of our petition to have the result set aside.”

A Labour spokesman said: “George Galloway should accept he was booted out by the people of Bradford West.

“They saw through his divisive politics and made a positive choice, by a majority of well over 11,000, to elect a brilliant new MP, Naz Shah.”

Mr Galloway was reported to police on Thursday for allegedly sending a tweet about exit polls before voting closed – which is banned under election law.

His spokesman called the allegation a “storm in a thimble”.

Speaking from his bunker in Berlin Mr Galloway, the leader of the East London based ‘Green Shorts’ party, added,

That was an order! Steiner’s assault was an order! Who do you think you are to dare disobey an order I give? So this is what it has come to! The military has been lying to me. Everybody has been lying to me, even the SS! Our generals are just a bunch of contemptible, disloyal cowards… Our generals are the scum of the German people! Not a shred of honour! They call themselves generals. Years at military academy just to learn how to hold a knife and fork! For years, the military has hindered my plans! They’ve put every kind of obstacle in my way! What I should have done… was liquidate all the high-ranking officers, as Stalin did!

  2. Reports seem to have missed that he is claiming that newspaper stories about his former assistant, Aisha Ali Khan, also influenced the election. The ones which centered on her buying his underpants.

Since none of these stories came from the Labour Party it is hard to see how they fall under electoral law but will be amusing to see him try.

I would assume that if he does continue a electoral court push, and it is a big IF, then Labour will counter push. She seems to have the stronger case because I can’t see any character assassination of him by her, so it boils down to misuse of postal votes. If a court case found that that happened and it benefited both candidates, which you would guess it might have, would that be a good thing?

I would expect it to be dropped though, where is the money and who would represent him, but for the conspiracy theories about his loss to continue to be pushed. Galloway himself just indulged kippers over Farage on this and we’ve all seen the nonsense over Tower Hamlets. Of course he has fled to his show on Russian TV, the cradle of conspiracy politics. And I would bet that at least some of the usual suspects will indulge his conspiracy mongering.

  3. Worth noting as well that all the Respect candidates for Bradford City Council lost – and lost badly.

  9. Rosie – perhaps your hatred for Galloway has something to do with your attraction to him, coupled together with a jealousy toward his current wife, which comes out as something like hate. Every girl loves a man in a fedora who smokes Cuban cigars, and doesn’t drink or gamble.

  10. One is beginning to feel that Mr Galloway is one cherry short of a Black Forest Gateau. (By, the way, what’s the story about his underwear?)

George Galloway could face probe after former PA claims she spent more time planning his wedding and shopping for underpants than doing parliamentary work

Aisha Ali-Khan, 34, worked for MP George Galloway for six months in 2012
She claims she spent most of her working day on his personal errands
Independent Commons expenses watchdog will now review her claims

  12. George Galloway is a side-show. Taking the piss is understandable. The main issues are why is the left so fucked and why is the Labour Party so weak.

  14. Sue R – why are you obsessed with Galloway’s underpants?

The man has style, obviously. A fedora hat and fancy underwear to impress his new bride. So what?

  16. Dean, women aren’t impressed by fedoras. They’re mostly worn by corpulent neckbeards with body odour issues who post on Men’s Rights talkboards about why women are all evil because they won’t date “nice guys” like them. They also tend to love conspiracy theories and RT (not so much Jewish people). So the typical Galloway fanboy, then.

  18. ‘Dean’ seems to entertain homosexual longings for Mr Galloway. He thinks the sun shines out of his arse. Nothing wrong with that, live and let live, unless you happen to be in Iran or any other Islamic country.

  20. Sue R – no i don’t. But i do think he is cool and something of a style icon. fedora hats, cigars, a young bird on the arm, nice bit of eye candy, as well as great lines and hooks. I don’t see anybody in the current Labour party that is anywhere as cool.

Jim- it takes guts to do what Galloway did. I bet Sean Matgamna wouldn’t have the guts to appear in a leotard doing a robot dance on national TV. if he did, maybe more people would take him seriously.

  21. So “Dean” surrenders to meme-politics, or celebrity politics. So much for being against neoliberalism.

    May 12, 2015 at 11:10 pm

  22. not really. Che and Fidel had a cool style, so did Trotsky. He had distinctive facial hair and glasses. a unique style. no surrender to meme/celebrity politics. In fact, Galloway was trying to radicalize the BB house and get a radical anti war message to a wider audience. In a somewhat suspicious move by BBC zionists? producers, his political stances were cut from Big brother.

    Dean

    May 12, 2015 at 11:24 pm

  23. Big Brother isn’t and never has been a BBC programme.

But then it’s been obvious from a long way out that “you” are simply trolling on a “thought experiment” so I suspect you know that as well as anyone and more than some.

  24. What “Dean” is really doing is mocking the idea that Galloway might remotely be on a par with those historic figures. No point in pretending “he” isn’t laughing at other posters here for not being in on the joke. I doubt he admires Galloway any more than Coatesy does. The style doesn’t ring true; it is obviously parodic.

“The electorate of Bradford West actually have a lot to answer for. For many around the world, including the men and women in the rubble of Gaza, it’s inexplicable that the electorate would chose to downgrade their MP in such a way, to such a depraved level.”
