Ken Livingstone Backs Naz Shah in Bradford as Galloway Faces Serious Challenge.

Has George Galloway met his match in Bradford West?

Parveen Akhtar

Extracts.

“Shah caught the public imagination by writing about her difficult personal life. She grew up poor and at times destitute after her father left her pregnant mother and two children for the neighbours’ 16-year-old daughter. Shah was then sent to Pakistan by her mother, who feared for her safety; there, she was forced into an arranged marriage at the age of 15. Her mother, meanwhile, suffered abuse at the hands of another man, who she ended up poisoning to death.

Shah’s journey into politics is a far cry from the PPE-at-Oxford template of the traditional upper-middle-class career politician. With this powerful story and the Labour Party political machine behind her, she is Galloway’s only credible opponent in the election.

“Galloway still has a following in Bradford West, and, as he is fond of pointing out, it’s an international one: “They’re watching this contest from Manhattan to Gaza, from Mirpur to Baghdad. They’re watching the result of this election all over the world.”

“Galloway still has a following in Bradford West, and, as he is fond of pointing out, it’s an international one: “They’re watching this contest from Manhattan to Gaza, from Mirpur to Baghdad. They’re watching the result of this election all over the world.”

But on April 13, former Respect councillor Mohammad Shabbir released a statement announcing that he had joined the Labour Group within Bradford council. He stated that “Respect (George Galloway) is a party of one and sadly it will remain so.”

“At the end of the first hustings, an apparent Respect supporter who had heckled from the side-lines throughout asked Naz Shah a question as she was leaving for the night:

“Who will be dancing in the streets if your party wins – the Israelis or the Palestinians?”

“Human beings will,” she replied.

“Your leader’s a bacon-eating Zionist!” came the reply.

Shah responded: “Half of England eats bacon. I can’t decide my policies by that.”

  2. He may well be.

But those of us in England do not have a preferable *electorally practical* option open to us.

You have to work with what is in front of you.

  3. but those in Bradford do; they have George Galloway.
why isn’t anti-zionism a national political issue? It should be. Do we live in the US where Netanyahu is lionized by every member of the senate?

Baroness Warsi was aware of it, thats why she resigned.
Naz Shah – what interests does she represent? The victim who is never wrong because she is an asian woman who was forced into an arranged marriage. if she was a disabled lesbian, that would be even better. but she represents indirectly, zionists interests which want to see a champion such as Galloway shut up. Which is what you want to. a bit weird.

AWL=zionist left = support Naz Shah to bash anti zionist Galloway.

  5. Neil is a brilliant example of the kind of ‘anti-Zionism’ that is identical with far-right anti-Semitism.

What the heckler really meant was: hey, Miliband’s a Jew, a Jew!, yet he eats bacon! Bacon!!!!!

  6. not at all. Zionist not Jew. its not the same Ed is a zionist. so is Cameron who’s not jewish.
but did you even watch the ed speech above? this is what the leader of Labour stands for; which is zionism.

where is the anti semitism? lets have open borders so we can have more Islamic voters who will vote out zionists in the Labour party.

  7. Yup, definitely far-right: racial fantasies dancing like a nightmare on your brain.

And pretty far-right at that, probably Tea Party amerloque, with disabled lesbians chasing him down the gutter.

  8. lies. i am not far right, i am far left.
but this victim culture is too much. kudos and extra points for being female, asian, arranged marriage etc. she’s being used by Labour, but she is not herself the problem.
the key thing is not her victim status, but zionism. this what what your own racial views try to hide.

  11. What possible relevance could eating bacon have? He doesn’t seem to do it very well.

I’ll bite – what is this ‘zionism’ that ‘neil’, who doesn’t know the first thing about socialism it must be said, keeps banging on about? It’s time ‘neil’ explains himself, to the best of his meagre ability.

  12. Andrew: as I’ve said before, I share your liberal instincts when it comes to BGL comments, but there are limits: isn’t it time to simply ban the anti-Semite “neil”, who is neither use nor ornament?

  15. Isn’t it odd that a Respect supporter would throw both ‘Zionist’ and ‘bacon muncher’ at Miliband? Could it be that they don’t actually realise he’s Jewish?

I don’t think most people do. Either that or they really don’t care. All the claims of antisemitism detected in criticism of Miliband that I’ve seen have been pretty tenuous, such as this rather desperate effort http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/is-the-criticism-of-ed-miliband-a-coded-form-of-antisemitism-9885745.html

If I’m right should this not be celebrated? And if I’m right why is this not being celebrated (and will it be when he becomes PM)?

  16. Good write-up, but, even by pulling out Ken Livingstone to try to work his magic, Labour have got no chance anywhere in Bradford or many of its satellite areas.

By choosing candidates like Naz Shah in Bradford West, they have sunk to the lowest depths imaginable and shot themselves in the foot.

For example, I have witnessed Labour’s Naz Shah at a husting and her performance was weak. She is naive and desperately struggles when it comes to talking about policies.

I am shocked that Naz Shah was so disloyal to her Labour Party that, when she lost the candidacy, she immediately chose to ‘jump ship’ to try to join Respect. A claim she doesn’t deny. It demonstrates very low scruples.

As the must-read information website about Bradford West at http://bradfordwest.wordpress.com/ provides evidence of, Naz Shah is a very questionable character and with many skeletons in her closet and it is not a surprise to me that all the indications now show she will lose in the election in a few days time.
