Witch Hunt of Gays Begins in Uganda.

with 8 comments

This front-page has been met with international outrage: l’Humanité calls it a “chasse aux sorcières médiatiques” (media witch-hunt). El Mundo reports the list of “200 personas homosexuales”. German media report, “eine Liste mit 200 Homosexuellen.”

The BBC states,

The BBC’s Ali Mutasa reports from the capital, Kampala, that many of the people named on Red Pepper’s list are known to be homosexuals, and some of them live abroad.

The list also includes some Ugandans who previously had not identified themselves as gay, the Associated Press news agency reports.

“The media witch-hunt is back,” tweeted Jacqueline Kasha, a prominent Ugandan lesbian activist who appears on Red Pepper’s list.

There was applause as Yoweri Museveni said: “Society can do something about it to discourage the trend”

Well-known gay rights activist Pepe Julian Onziema is also on the list, along with a popular hip-hop star and a Catholic priest, AP reports.

Uganda’s anti-homosexuality act

  • Life imprisonment for gay sex, including oral sex
  • Life imprisonment for “aggravated homosexuality”, including sex with a minor or while HIV-positive
  • Life imprisonment for living in a same-sex marriage
  • Seven years for “attempting to commit homosexuality”
  • Between five and seven years in jail or a $40,700 (£24,500) fine or both for the promotion of homosexuality
  • Businesses or non-governmental organisations found guilty of the promotion of homosexuality would have their certificates of registration cancelled and directors could face seven years in jail

  1. This seems like ancient history all of a sudden!

” To defend press freedom the 19th century French liberal Benjamin Constant used analogy. * He imagined a society before the invention of language. Suddenly people could speak. When it undermined order figures in authority began to regret this state of affairs. Gradually the innovation was accepted. Nobody any longer had the idea of forbidding talking on the grounds that it could be used to spread rumours, lies or fantasies.”

  3. It’s because he doesn’t like Hilary Wainright much and is a bit confused by the title of the publication.

  4. Name me a living leftist Beddy Boy (aka Ian Donovan, or at any rate, his best mate) likes!

Mind you he must be expecting “controversy” with this line by the Donovonites on the Age Of Consent,

    Ian Donovan,

“Thus I moved the following amendment to point 9:

Replace “Abolish age-of-consent laws” with “Abolish rigid, absolute age-of-consent laws

Replace “Alternative legislation to protect children from sexual abuse” with “Alternative legislation to protect young people and children from sexual abuse based on proven, effective consent, which takes full account of the wishes and feelings of any younger party. The burden of proof of this to be on an older party, if such exists.”

“It is completely correct to try to counterpose a coherent social reform to the oppressive status quo, where, on the one hand, young people are exposed to sexual abuse, while, on the other hand, genuine relationships are often brutally broken up by the state under the pretext of protecting young people from abuse – whatever their actual wishes.”

“So I propose a modified position, which recognises, as do the CPGB comrades, the harm that is done both by sexual abuse and by authoritarian state and parental interference in the consensual personal relationships of young people.”

“One other related measure that needs serious modification is the one that criminalises relationships between teachers and pupils under 18 (below adulthood but not the age of consent), and the like, irrespective of consensuality. Rather than criminalisation, the same rules should apply as with doctors and patients who enter such personal relationships and do not immediately end the doctor/patient relationship at the same time – the doctor is struck off and barred from practice. This is right because of the similar level of vulnerability that the teacher/(non-adult) pupil, or doctor/patient relationship, implies. But jailing someone for an otherwise legal, consensual relationship is an injustice, and an offence against even formal equality before the law. This law itself – again a product of New Labour – is reactionary in its current form.

These proposals I believe embody a more effective critique of the current, hegemonic and largely reactionary view on sexual freedom and youth than the current policy in the CPGB Draft programme, from which its proposed motion was, of course, taken. The upshot of the debate was that point 9 of the motion on ‘Youth and education’ was remitted for later discussion – the remainder of the motion being passed as the policy of the Communist Platform.”

  5. “Name me a living leftist Beddy Boy (aka Ian Donovan, or at any rate, his best mate) likes!”

This coming from a drone supporting leftist who regards the following people as beyond the pale:

    Tariq Ali
    George Galloway
    John Pilger
Anyone in the SWP and RESPECT
Anyone who posts on Socialist Unity
    Anyone writing for the WSWS
Anyone who has been a steadfast supporter of the Palestinians

    The list goes on.

Incidentally I like Louis Proyect for example, on Syria we are nearly on the same page, on Ukraine we are not. I can accept differences and take seriously those leftists who differ with me on Syria and Ukraine, or Mali or Libya or statism v co-operatives etc etc

What I could never tolerate are the drone supporters, those that are steadfast supporters of imperialism, as all decents are.

I mean re Ukraine, where is the analysis of imperialism in all of this? This is a nation that is a vital strategic region and all decency can give us are liberal platitudes. It is all rather pathetic.

Yet another fine example of the poverty of decency.
