Parti Communiste and Mélenchon: Crisis Talks on their Differences.

Communists and Left Party Still  Together?

Pierre Laurent et Jean-Luc Mélenchon vont-ils se rabibocher?

Are Pierre Laurent and Jean-Luc Mélenchon going to make up? Here

Today the leader of the French Communist Party and the Parti de gauche are meeting.

The main division concerns this year’s  municipal elections, where in several cities including Paris, the Communist Party has decided to ally with the Socialist Party.

” Jean-Luc Mélenchon has commented, “With friends like that, we do not need enemies. The Left Front is in tatters”, then Jean-Luc Mélenchon commented on his blog . But this Friday, the two men could be reconciled. So Pierre Laurent (PCF) and Jean-Luc Mélenchon (PG) . They are getting together (after not speaking for months)  “to clarify the situation.”

One key area of controversy is the use of the Front de Gauche logo by those supporting joint lists with the Socialists.

In Paris the former Ligue Communiste Révolutionnaire group, the Gauche Unitaire, led by  Christian Picquet, has decided to support the PCF’s decision to join a Socialist Party list. (Here)

The future of the Front de gauche (FdG) hangs in the balance.

We will be discussing later François Hollande’s turn towards policies that favour the market, his “social liberalism”, announced earlier this week.

This is extremely serious and discouraging (not to mention the behaviour of somebody who promised, as Monsieur Normal,  to be squeaky clean).

For the moment we will however signal Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s admiration for François Mitterrand, not normally associated with an alternative to social liberalism, and the market.

In 2011 he made the eulogy of the early period of President Mitterrand’s rule, and the “L’aspiration populaire à l’unité de la gauche.”  (Here)

Specifically Mélenchon absolved Mitterrand of any responsibility for the Socialists’ rightward turn in 1983.

This was apparently due to the forces of finance and all the leaders of the Parti Socialiste – except the Head of State.

As  Nicolas Marchand remarked at the time, as if Mitterrand had nothing to do with it!

He continues and notes that Mélenchon has been known to present himself as a future Mitterrand, leading the left to power.

Well the former President knew at least how to win allies.

  1. There has been a partial reconciliation: the two leaders joined the same demonstration together on Saturday, at Marseille.
