King James Bible: Please Not!

with 4 comments

Today is the date of a celebration of the first publication of the King James Bible.

Westminster Abbey is holding a some pomp on the anniversary of the publication of the King James Bible in 1611.

Notorious god-botherers and some people who should know better are united in praise of this rickety translation.

First point.

It is not a fit book for the world.

Et je pèse mes mots.

Horrible doesn’t even begin to describe it.

Now to the meat: its influence on the English language has not been a happy one.

Hideous words, such the ill-fated ‘gotten’ abound in it.

Its use of Thees Thines and and Thous, have condemned the handy use of the first person familiar form in English to the rubbish tip – by assocation with this withered text.

Finally, the politics.

The first part, the Jewish Bible, was written down in the 6th century before the Common Era.

Translators of the Revised Standard Bible put the task of rendering this text into modern English as “difficult”.

That is, to put it crudely, because parts of its appear to have been written by the ancient world version of the Taliban.

In fact ancient world is a bit of misnomer: barbarian is the word.

The so-called Gospels spell bad news for humanity, as we are expected to bow down before the Caesars of the planet.

It is therefore fitting that Prince Charles is leading the ceremony at Westminster Abby.

  1. Verily I say unto you, in the King James, the word ‘gotten’ appeareth not often.
